You’re such an Animal

Welcome to my “CopyCat” Fast Food Week! You have no idea how excited I am to present some favorite recipes from very popular fast food joints! So let’s start off with something that originated in the West! If you’ve ever gone to California you haven’t completed your trip until you go to In-N-Out Burger and order the Animal Style Hamburger!

CopyCat Animal Style In-N-Out Burger


1 pound ground beef (I used 80/20)

2 tbsp. butter

1 large yellow onion, slices

1/2 tsp. Kosher salt

4 tbsp. Mayo

2 tbsp. ketchup

4 tsp. sweet pickle relish

1 tsp. sugar

1 tsp. distilled white vinegar

4 hamburger buns , (I used local bakery buns)

Freshly ground black pepper

16 dill pickles chips

4 slices ripe tomato

Lettuce lettuce (preferably iceberg however I didn’t have so I used what I had)

4 tsp. yellow mustard

4 slices American Cheese


Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

First, form the hamburger meat into four patties, approx. 1/4 inch thick and slightly larger than the size of your bun. Season them with salt and pepper.

Heat butter in a large skillet over medium to high heat.

Add the onion slices and kosher salt to skillet.

Reduce heat to medium low and cook, tossing occasionally until onions are well browned, approx. 15 minutes. Once onions begin to sizzle add 1 tbsp. of water to skillet and stir.

Continue cooking onions until water evaporates and onions start sizzling again.

Repeat process 3 times adding 1 tbsp. of water with each iteration until onions are meltingly soft and dark brown.

Transfer onions to a small bowl and set aside leaving any butter residual in the pan.

Instructions for Animal Topping

In small bowl add the mayonnaise, ketchup, relish, sugar, and vinegar to a small bowl and stir thoroughly until combine. Set aside.

Place sliced buns in preheated oven for 2 minutes. Remove from oven. Using the butter left behind by the onions, press the sliced buns (each half) into the pan and toast for a few seconds until crispy and set aside on plate.

Add 1 tbsp. of butter to the pan.

On medium to high heat pan add the patties to the skillet.

Cook patties without moving until well browned and crusty approx. 2 minutes. While they are cooking, spread tsp. of mustard to the raw side.

Flip burger over and cook the mustard side until crispy.

Preparing Burger Add the Animal sauce to each half of the bun.

Add four pickles, one slice of tomato and lettuce.

Top with patty and add a slice of cheese and then some of the caramelized onions.

Top with top bun.
